After much hassle I finally got my dreaded autocomplete to work. I posted my version here http://civicrm.org/node/528 (as a comment on Xavier's).

The next day (I think) the url on the server was set to redirect to https://. My autocomplete now only works from an https page.

I am constructing the url like this. Is it possible to make it return a https url?
