I'm trying to find the best user interface for managing email subscriptions.

This works great except it doesn't show you the groups you're already subscribed to. I've set one up here:
http://www3.greens.org.nz/civicrm/mailing/subscribe

Is there a way to have the groups you're in checked? This is what users would expect to see.

This is a know issue - currently not scheduled for fix until 2.4 (a patch could make this happen sooner):

How about using the Group(s) field in a profile? This does show the group(s) that you're subscribed to:

http://your-site.com/civicrm/profile/edit?gid=2&reset=1
(replace gid=2 with the id of the profile you've created with the Group(s) field in it)
