Organizational Structure and Permissions
June 27, 2009, 11:17:41 am
Our organization is a global alliance of many different entities. We are formed this way for many practical reasons. As we think over our needs, one idea that occurs is that we could use a meta-membership that is not in itself associated with any one specific entity, but which could be the starting point for a contribution to one of several entities, or for an event registration for an event sponsored by one of several entities. Identifying the specific entity essentially determines the destination of the funds. Otherwise, the information is common, and it would be useful to track the participation and contributions of members in multiple entities. We can even see situations where an event registration might involve two different contributions, each going to a different one of the entities. So the question is: could CiviCRM be organized this way?

It looks to me that with multiple memberships and multiple groups we can cover a lot of this.  But can we have different processing into different accounts associated with different contributions and events?

And what about permissions?  For example, is there any way to say that back-end user X can only see contributions to organization A?  So if she is working with contributions for whatever reason, perhaps to reconcile accounting or something, her searches and views of users would show only that subset of contributions?

Anybody doing anything like this?

there are at least three organizations (US PIN, IMBA, UK VAWs in Manchester) that i'm aware of that are planning to use CiviCRM v2.3 with a fair amount of the capabilities you've described
