Contribute pages in Google appear with snippet=2
June 28, 2009, 01:24:52 am
I've just noticed that our contribute pages are listed in Google, but they all feature snippet=2 in the URL, which means that people coming straight in from a Google search for donation receive an unthemed page.

Trying to identify what in CiviCRM is linking to these pages so I can template it away.

375 example sites - you might want to see if your site is listed here: canned Google for donation pages linked which have no template assigned.

Most of the sites linked in the above (those who have retained the CiviCRM version info, anyway) are 2.0.x, so it may be that this is already fixed in current releases. The site I noticed it on has just (this weekend) been upgraded so may fix itself in Google's index soon.

dont remember offhand when / if we ever use that parameter for contribution pages. that parameter is typically used in ajax calls to fetch the contents of an html url (but not the surronding page)

I don't imagine it would be used, unless displaying the contribution form in an AJAXy widget.

But presumably something in CiviCRM is linking to it, or there wouldn't hundreds of such pages showing up in Google. (Unless there's another reason Google would index it?)

Dave Greenberg has just pointed out to me (via IRC) that this was used in earlier versions of CiviCRM to link to a printer-friendly version of a public contribute page. I guess that version gets the most Google juice because it's lacking all the themed HTML cruft.

Printer friendly links seem to have been removed in a recent release (folks, use CSS!) so this should no longer be an issue.
