field separator not recognized
July 01, 2009, 11:11:59 am
I try to import a csv file with ; as separator and 3 fields. The first row contains field names. But CiviCRM does not recognize the 3 fields but puts the whole row in one single field. I tried it with updating to the newest version (2.2.6), I tried it with the demo on civicrm.org and I tried it with different types of csv files (comma, semicolon, tab, with and without single and double quotes): all the same. I can't import my contacts because all the data is put together in one single field. Every hint is appreciated. I'm very new to CiviCRM, running on a drupal 6.x version (up to date), debian, php5, MySQL 5, apache etc.

Hello Christian,
Would it be possible for you to attach (or just copy/paste here) the first few lines of your file (including the header line)? This way we could see exactly what you are trying to import and possibly figure out why it is not working for you.

1. Configure field separator.
go to -> Administer CiviCRM -> Global Settings -> Localization -> check "Import / Export Field Separator" give your field separator here.

2. Try to import .csv file which has configured field separator.

hi Kiran,
thanks a lot! It works! It would be a great thing if this was mentioned in the documentation...

The documentation is a wiki - and CiviCRM relies on the community to improve it. You can register to get a login (Signup link upper right corner), and then add the "tip" in a good spot :-)
