Civimail subscribe page - I cannot get to work

Hi Folks,

This is a dumb question - but I cannot get the Civimail subscribe page to function.  No matter what I do I get an error as follows:

There are no public mailing list groups to display.
Now that's pretty straight forward but I do have two public mailing list groups and I have set all Drupal roles to have Civicrm permissions to allow access to the subscribe/unsubscribe pages.  So there's something that I just can't work out.

I am running Drupal 6.13 and CiviCRM 2.2.6.

Any help would be appreciated

you might want to double check that at least one group 'Visibility' should be 'Public User Pages' or 'Public User Pages and Listings'.
( go to  Manage Groups -> check 'Visibility' )

try to access Mailing List Subscription page.
( run this url : civicrm/mailing/subscribe?reset=1 )

Well - that's exactly what I have done.  I have three groups with the right visibility and also tried to access using the url specified.  Is there somewhere that I can see what the precise nature of the error is - maybe I need to set on debug mode.

The groups also need to be marked as Mailing List "types" in their Group Settings.

Yes - they are set to Mailng lists as well.

The problem turns out to be the fact that the groups are "Smart Groups".  This was done to populate the groups from 'tagged' contacts and once populated contacts could subscribe/unsubscribe.  I obviously had a misunderstanding of the way that the subscribe/unsubscribe groups work.
