Civi Choosing Value for Field that Isn't Required
July 09, 2009, 07:24:43 am
Situation:
I have a profile that I've created called "Client intake." It's a form used to collect information about potential clients. The potential clients themselves fill out the form. I'm using the "standalone" version of it, on a Drupal page (I wanted to custom fuss with some of the html).

I have a custom field, for individuals, called "client type" which has an option select list. This field is for admin use. This field is set as "not required." It does not appear on the Client Intake Profile.

Problem:
When someone submits the Client Intake form, and a new Civi contact record gets created, Civi is putting one of the select options for "client type" into that new record (it is always the same one) even though that field is not required and no option value is selected as default.

Workaround:
Admins are supposed to review this intake form anyway, so the workaround is pretty simple and won't cause much trouble for my client. The admin simply changes the value put in by Civi to the correct one. But I'm trying to impress the client with Civi (and so far doing pretty well on that front  :)) but this kind of smells like a bug.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong.

As always, thank you so much.

do u have a default value set for the client type custom field? I suspect so, and hence u are seeing that behavior

if not, can you try to reproduce on demo

thanx

lobo,

Nope, no default set for that custom field.

Also note, when I go to:

 civicrm/contact/add?ct=Individual&reset=1

nothing is pre-selected for that field. Also, when I fill out that form and click save, that field remains blank.

I'll try to reproduce it on the demo.

best,
