Is a subdomain using the main domain's certificate considered "shared" by Civi?
July 13, 2009, 05:55:54 pm
The question speaks for itself, I hope. I have a shared SSL situation, which I have learned the hard way is not supported; yet I would like to collect donations in civiContribute. I have an option of installing a certificate on domain.com and then installing civiCRM on sub.domain.com. (Hopefully sub.domain.com would be Drupal 6.x, but I could live with standalone if it meant the SSL would work.)

Is civiCRM going to recognize the server as secure when I try to force secure URLs on sub.domain.com, while the certificate lives one level up?  Will Drupal change anything?

the way we structured the code was:

if the main site is at http://www.example.com/, we expect the SSL site to be at: https://www.example.com/

if your domain.com SSL cert is a wildcard cert and your apache is configured properly the above might be valid. If not, i dont think the code will work

Thanks for the details. I'm hosted on a cPanel account -- not at all sure how to find out how it'll react without plunging in for the cert, doing all the installation, and testing. Sounds like low odds given what you're saying. (Host says the same thing - no guarantees.)
