Yes, this is a useful feature but also quite complicated etc. We'd like to tackle it at some stage but currently not in our short/medium term plans. Would be great for GPNZ to spend some time and resources on this. IMO, its a fairly big project to do it right and complete

Understood - but it seems to me that even having something visible that says it is a "Change log" which only records 'who did something' overstates what it actually is  :-\.
I realise that what we need involves significant levels of data capturing that needs to be done in a way that does not slow the system down. Am surprised that this has not been an issue for others. Will report back if/when we make any commitments in this area.

And in the meantime we will extend 'Activity' to capture some of the factors we want eg 'when a change of contact details is made', when there is a 'change in who fills a position'.
Which brings me to some questions about the fact that an activity can't just be assigned to the person but also shows on the assignees list - eg I note the person in a Position has 'changed' and it shows on my History.

Hi Peter - Activities in CiviCRM have typically been used to record an interaction between the "owner" organization (as represented by a logged in staff person, volunteer, etc.) and a constituent, client etc. For example, Jane Canvasser CALLS Sarah Voter about an upcoming election. Hence, Activities have a "source" contact (Jane Canvasser) and a target contact (Sarah Voter). In general, our thought is that it is useful to be able to view these interactions from "both sides".

Our proposed re-novation of Activities actually extends this model to support a 3rd "role" - an "assignee". So, to continue the above use case - Paula Volunteermanager ASSIGNS Jane Canvasser to CALL Sarah Voter. The new assignee role will be optional.

This approach and the changes to the model are described here:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Activity+Data

Would be great if you have time to review and give us feedback on these proposed changes.

Yep - understood Dave but while you'll understand my desire to find a work around for the lack of history in the Change Log. Have already made some comments on the wiki re activities. hope they are useful. certainly having an 'assignee' will help.
