participant status and multiple events

We frequently are running two or three events at a time for which people register using CiviEvent. Often people select to send in a check, and we like to change the participant status from "pending" to "registered" when we receive the check using the "edit event registration" page, checking the "record payment" checkbox and recording payment details. However, when we are simultaneously running Event 2 using a profile with required fields for workshop choices, those appear on the "edit event registration" page. Because they are required fields, they must be filled out, even though they are not relevant to Event 1 for which we are attempting to record payment. Is our setup wrong, or is there some way to bypass this? Batch update works for changing participant status, but not for recording payment details.

Thanks for any help.

This is more a restriction on previous versions of civicrm. v2.3 will allow you to create custom data on a per event basis. This will avoid the issue of having to fill out customd data not related to an event
