Ability to modify core CiviCRM fields
July 15, 2009, 08:45:55 am
For as wonderfully as CiviCRM seems to work with drupal for a number of things, I've been running into problem after problem trying to set up the contact records to fit the needs of my organization - primarily because only certain fields are available for certain types (first name, last name, prefix etc for individual, but not for organization etc).  These fields also cannot be modified to go in other record types.  When I create a custom data set, I can put my fields in any record type, so why not the ability to modify core civicrm fields in this way?

In my case, each "organization" has a primary contact who is the recipient of all mailings.  This contact's mailing address is the organization's mailing address, and their email address is the same, and ideally the person would simply be listed in the same record as the organization.

The problem is I can't assign first name, last name, prefix etc to an organization because they are restricted to individuals.  If I separate out the contact to another record, then I have to duplicate the mailing address because organization address cannot be shared like household address.  I also can't give the primary contact an email address because it's already used by the organization.

All this could be solved by letting us modify the settings for the core fields the same way we can modify our custom fields.
