disable alphanumeric filtering?

Is it possible to disable alphanumeric filtering? I'm talking about this bar here

(http://rimu.geek.nz/civi.png)

I have identified it as a major source of slowness because all queries need to be run twice; once to get the list of letters that can be filtered on, and once for the list of contacts...

Is there a setting I can change in the admin area, or will I need to hack the code?

My install of CiviCRM doesn't have that option there, all the fields in the 'contact search' fieldset have been moved to http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/setting/misc?reset=1 EXCEPT the one I'm after, which has vanished.  :o

Weird. I'm talking to the guy who did the install now...

NO - i think this is a 2.2.6 v 2.2.7 issue - Lobo? This a new option.
Anyway am thinking this will only apply on Contact Search and am wondering if Rimu is querying it across site ie including Manage Groups and CiviMail etc

It's mostly for when showing contacts, either as search results or as members of groups. I don't mind having it in parts of the system where it's performing Ok, like when listing groups or mailings
