Error running Utils/File.php on line 114

Installing 1.8.
All seemed to go well until I finally arrived at the configuration of Civicrm itself.
At step 7. of the manual install "Enable CiviCRM Module and Blocks", I enabled the modules, then when I saved the configuration, I got a long series of error messages, which reappear each time I run the Drupal admin.

They are of the type:

# warning: mkdir() [function.mkdir]: Permission denied in /var/www/html/drupal-5.2/sites/all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Utils/File.php on line 114.
# warning: mkdir() [function.mkdir]: No such file or directory in /var/www/html/drupal-5.2/sites/all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Utils/File.php on line 114.

Naturally, I read the following paragraph in the manual only AFTER clicking on Save Configuration. Anyway, I made sure that the directories were created and given appropriate rights. Nothing doing - I always see these error messages and cannot advance. Changing the rights of the files and directories does not seem to change anything.

Is there a log somewhere that details exactly which file or directory is inexistant or unwritable?
Any other help?

Thanks,
JC
