I have a custom profile to capture information for newsletters. On the front page of my website, I want to place a block which just asks for an individual's email address to signup, and would then redirect them to the full form with the email address already filled in.

Is this possible to accomplish with CiviCRM core, or would it require additional coding?

I think you will need to do some coding. maybe use a simple drupal form to collect the email address and then redirect to a profile and use a hook to set the default value for the profile field
