the release formerly known as "2.3"

I seeing tantalising morsels in these fora (if that is indeed the plural of "forum") that release 2.3 is now release 3.0 and it has now entered the QA cycle.

Where should I look to stay informed about this release and when I can get my grubby little hands on it?

I should heed my own (so called) policy of "look first and post later"!

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/CiviCRM+v2.3 seems to describe the new release (with the old name!).

However, having read that page (quickly, mind you) I now have a question for the great ones here. 2.3 had been billed as a usability release. A minor release. I am wondering what is the logic for making this "3.0", a major release. Are there significant schema or architecture changes?

My interest is both academic and pragmatic. Rebadging it as a major release suggests to me that the developers are telling the community that an extra level of testing is required by anyone considering upgrading. Is that the case?

there are no significant schema or architecture changes, BUT there are major functionality changes including:

1. CiviReport (released in alpha form for 2.2.x)

2. New navigation structure and menu

3. Significant usability improvements especially in the contact view/edit forms

4. multi-site support

5. and a ton of other changes

i think as with all releases, the more testing support we get from the community, the higher the quality
