Is port 25 being blocked?

Is this error indicative of port 25 being blocked?

Failed to connect to *servername*:25 [SMTP: Failed to connect socket: Connection refused (code: -1, response: )]

I had a mailing go out perfectly, then it stopped working without changing any settings. I am assuming my webhost saw 4,000 port 25 requests go across their network and put the stop to it..

I'm not sure about the message.

If you're on a *nux box, try one of these 2 commands from your server to test access to port 25 on the mail server.

  • If you're not using TLS/SSL, try: telnet MAIL-SERVER-URL 25
  • If you are using TLS/SSL, try: openssl s_client -starttls pop3 -connect MAIL-SERVER-URL:25
  • Alternately, if you have a mail client on the box, try using that
  • If you're using Windows, I think telnet will work but I'm not sure about openssl. Ask your hosting company or try Google?

Doing this will isolate whether it's a CiviCRM issue or something lower down the stack.

Should I just stop wasting my time and use Sendmail? I don't know how to run a terminal command on the server side. I talked to the hosting company and they said that they put an exception for our IP and Port 25 in outbound traffic. I still don't see a connection attempt from Civicrm when I get the same message as above.

How could I diagonose this on the CiviCRM side in the meantime? I just find it hard to believe that my settings were correct and working perfectly and then suddenly stopped - and I changed nothing!

Can you connect to port 25 on the mail server from an email client? It sounds like the hosting co have opened that, but if it fails that could still be an issue.

Are you using authentication (supplying a username and password)?

It's weird that it worked and now it doesn't!

This happened to me on Dreamhost.  I was baffled for a while, then figured out that they had changed their policy and started blocking port 25 on shared hosting (and failed to notify anyone).  I had to switch to their virtual shared hosting to fix it.  Good luck!
