I had an issue recently where a client wanted to be able to directly link to /civicrm/contact/search/advanced?reset=1&force=1&gid=26 However as group 26 was a smart group, the "edit search criteria" form was always uncollapsed and not even collapsible.  I believe this is the desired functionality when editing a smart group, but not for me when I wanted to link to the results. 

I created a small patch for civiCRM which supports the current behaviour but also supports a new '&collapse=1' in the URL which allows the form to be collapsed even for smart groups.
