While I'm at it... Event config tabs
July 24, 2009, 03:08:15 am
Hi,

Just another note from looking to try something on the sandbox: I do prefer the tabs for the different configuration options but I found myself wishing there was a tab for going to the 'live page' as it took quite a few clicks to get to it from those tabs.

I realise that the live page is not a configuration option but the place I found myself looking for a link to it was looking for a tab for it.

Hmm - not sure another tab is the right approach since (as you say) this is a navigation link rather than a config "form". However, it would be easy to add link(s) or a 'Go to' drop-down in the tab framework. I'm thinking you MIGHT want 3 links:

* View Event (Event Info)
* Test-drive Registration
* Live Registration

(and only show the 2nd and 3rd links if online reg is supported for this event)

Can you look at the tab layout and give us feedback on whether all 3 are needed, or just "View Event", as well as how / where to expose these link(s) or a  "go-to" dropdown. (I was thinking of placement to left of Done button.)

Just went back in to look again and here are the things I noticed navigating around it.

1) First up I got confused because I expected clicking on 'Configure' from Manage Events

http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/event/manage&reset=1

or Dashboard
http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/event&reset=1

to take me straight through to the tabby screen but there's another screen first. It adds some value (help text) but it's an extra step too.

2) On the tabby screen: My initial thought was

Quote
"I'm not sure what the Done button is for given that there is also a Save button. I assume it means 'save and close'. I'm not clear why it isn't sitting with it's buddies 'save' and 'cancel'".

Having played with it I can see that Done and Cancel apply to the activity of configuring the event whereas Save applies to the particular tab.

3) Location tab - should 'Show Location?' be at the bottom or top? If it's deselected should the other fields disappear?

4) Which links: yes, I would probably use all three navigation links. I would probably use the 'show participants' link too but I am conscious that the participants information I'd really link to link to is the summary as shown on the dashboard - which you can only see for the most recent events.

5) Where should the links go? I'm not good on these questions. To the left of the 'Done' button seems most logical, as you say, but when you disable various tabs the tabs wrap onto the next line so I'm not sure how it would look. I'm not a big fan of drop down go-tos but I suspect it might be hard to make the links look good. Not sure, I'm hoping someone else will jump in.

6) Event templates are looking good!

7) Having price sets in the events menu is great too.

8) I kind of feel like having both Dashboard and Manage Events is unnecessary. If the Manage Events search box were on the Dashboard screen (it's quite small) I don't think you'd ever use the Manage Events screen

9) Possible Minor tweak to Dashboard - having the " Find more event participants..." at the top of the recent registrations table as well as the bottom would be really useful. I rarely look at the recent registrations table but I often scroll past it to get to that link

10) Dashboard - the Date(s) column on the Event Summary doesn't seem to wrap and the width has blown right out to the right hand side. (Firefox)

And on this list - when I went to search for participants I found lots of new statuses (yay) but what I wanted was to see all 'pending' of whatever sort and I had to figure out and select a lot of boxes. My initial thought was

"Where is the 'all pending statuses' box"

I'm trying to report my 'first impressions' rather than try to interpret them into how to solve them (or whether they necessarily should be solved) because I think it's valuable to consider first impressions in a usability release. That doesn't mean I want you to treat them as a more serious critique.

I also momentarily thought the new black civicrm menu at the top was broken because it doesn't drop down on hover until you have clicked on it once.
