The following helps a bit:

Drupal Administer --> Site config --> Performance: enable all caching (choose Aggressive on the option that allows it as long as you see a positive compatibility note).

For those of you new to CiviCRM under Drupal, I plan to shortly post my setup notes in the hope that others will have an easier time than I did.
