Questions regarding CiviMail Setup and mail server
July 28, 2009, 01:51:44 pm
Hi,

My client has required that the MX records be directed to there Exchange server.

So my question is how will this affect Civimails ability to do that things it does?

I will still have out going mail from the hosting server.  Can Civi be set up to use the external Mail server?

Is there a firewall between their exchange server and your Civi install? Civi can use POP3 or IMAP to get mail but it does need to be able to access those services on the given server.

I believe the bounces also wind up in the default e-mail bucket (ie because the verp replies aren't real e-mails) so your CiviMAIL bounce processing address needs to be receiving all undeliverable e-mails.

I don't know yet.  There may be a VPN / Firewall in between.

To simplified things, I was considering setting up another domain for CiviCRM - I haven't exactly thought that though yet.

Well, it probably depends how far through getting CiviCRM into the organisation you are. If you are still in the process of showing them how useful it will be for them and getting them hooked you might want to go for the path of least resistance and then deal with moving the site later.

Being relatively new to Drupal and CiviCRM myself I have caveated much of the functionality to my client. They are probably more likely to use other tools initially. I suspect that they will not use CiviCRM on a daily basis as an actually CRM.

Initially, I just need to collected donations online,  collect names for a newsletter and have a calendar of events.  How the newsletter gets created and sent could be through another mechanism but why not CiviMail?

Can I use any external mail account for Civi or does it have to be the domain that it reside on?  For instance, I have several alias domains for this client.  I could easily setup mail accounts under one of those domains on my server.  That has the added benefit of not having to interfacing with their Exchange server and IT department.

Can you think of any issues with that idea?

You've been very helpful - Thanks for answering my questions.

I have many more but I will open separate threads.

I don't think it does have to be the same domain - it uses the POP protocol to retrieve the messages from whatever mail account it is using. It does need to use the 'catchall' account for that domain if you want to do bounce processing

Did you read the chapter on it in the floss manual?

Yes.  But I'm a little dense ;)

I know there's a lot of information in the manual and its been very helpful; it takes a while for the hands on stuff to gel with the book stuff. Taken as a whole, Drupal and CiviCRM are a lot to get your head around.

I usually have to read manuals two or three times to really understand them. Give me another month or two and I will get it.

Thanks
