Anyone doing CPD Registration with CiviCRM?
August 02, 2009, 09:56:32 am
Hi,

I am wondering it anyone has done or is doing something like Continuing Professional Development
(or in our case, Continuing Medical Education) with CiviCRM? Not the actual eLearning but the registration
of the events, participants, lecturers and credentialling/controlling?

Basically what this means that a event must be pre-registered, is then approved and assigned Points which
the participants accumulate. The event is also grouped into one of a fixed number of categories, because
a number of points in one or other categories are mandatory annually. Lecturers get more points than participants.
Events can be once-off, weekly, monthly or in similar (regular or irregular) intervals.

Participants register AFTER attending, so there must be some measure of control, so for example the organizer
might receive a list of random (transaction) numbers, which the participants then can use to register (prove) their
attendance at an event.

All possible participants would be already normalized since they would be registered with their respective
Health Professions Council, so no outsiders (unregistered practitioners) would need (or be allowed) to register
their details into the systems.

A few more details would need to be looked at but in principle can something like this can be done with CiviCRM?
I am familiar with Joomla, but Drupal would not be a problem either.

And it's for a developing country situation, ie resources are scarce...

Most of it should be possible in CiviEvent. You will however need to be familiar with PHP/MySQL since some of the aspects will need to be coded via hooks etc

1. The registration part can be done via the approval process in CiviCEvent 3.0 (alpha coming out next week)

2. The points system can be done with a hook and assign the points based on participant role and event

3. the category and points for an event can potentially be stored in custom fields for the event. You will need to customize the template to hide these fields from the Event Info page
