Date Picker / File Permissions Problem

I'm stuck debugging a server I didn't setup. the URL /sites/all/modules/civicrm/js/lang/calendar-lang.php?en_US for a Drupal site should show something. but mine shows page not found, suggesting a permissions issue. I think. But it seems the perms are the same as index.php. Here they are, lined up together:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 abc abc 980 Dec 26  2007 index.php*
 -rwxr-xr-x 1 abc abc 2835 May 25 06:25 calendar-lang.php*
and the perms for the directories of those two files also match. What else can I check?
