Advice on merging two CiviCRM sources
August 05, 2009, 08:22:14 pm
Hello,

I have two CiviCRM installs, both currently on 2.2.2, similar custom fields and largely identical setup.

  • Database 1 contains ~8000 records.
  • Database 2 contains ~3000 records that are largely a subset of database 1.

For whatever reason, about a year ago, these two databases forked. However, information in db 2, particularly pertaining to memberships, is more up to date, and can be considered authoritative. I want to get this client back to having only one database.

What would be the best procedure to follow for reliable and/or straightforward import of records in db 2 into db 1?

I could do a straight CSV export of contacts from db 2, incorporating membership fields and such, and then import it into db 1, but I have a feeling this would result in a fair bit of data and relationship loss?

Note when I say "similar" custom fields, tagging and such has forked a fair bit between the two DBs. I'd like to get the tags from db 2 across if possible, but can live with losing them.

(for background, db 2 came about when the client created an empty install to use for a subscription drive, and then proceeded to use it for other purposes afterwards)

I would recommend you should use inbuilt import feature and then may be run Dedupe check just to make sure there are no duplicates records in new database.
