civiCRM will not re-install
August 10, 2009, 05:07:52 am
I was receiving a fatal error after a directory move. Since we had not done anything with the app yet, I removed the application and attempted to re-install. It appeared to remove OK but now when I try to install it, nothing happens, it just stays on the installation screen doing nothing until the admin console times out.

I checked the components and administrator/components directories and there are no residual leftovers. Is it possible the uninstall process leaves something in the database which is preventing it from being re-installed?

Yes -- uninstallation does not remove the database tables.

You will need to get into your database (phpMyAdmin, CLl, or similar tool) and open the civicrm_domain table, and change the value of the config_backend field to null. That will allow Civi to reset itself on your new server.

Hi, thank you for responding.

I just tried that but I am getting the same results. I didn't see the 2.+ version so I'm trying to install the 3.x alpha. It just churns for awhile in the install and then gives up and falls to the joomla admin console.

There sure are a lot of civiCRM tables. Do you have any other suggestions?

- Joe

ok, sounds like you're getting a php timeout.
did you increase the memory_limit and max_execution_time settings in php? do a search on the forums if you need guidance. if you're using shared hosting, the default settings are probably pretty low, causing a timeout.

I increased execution time from 30 to 300 (maximum allowed by hostmonster) and the memory limit from 32M to 64M. Still no change.

I was able to initially install with the original settings.

Thank you again for your assistance, any other suggestions I could do?  I'm suspecting it is all of this residue left in the database. I do not know MySQL enough to attempt to delete it all without fear of seriously screwing the site up worse.
