Installation strategie
August 11, 2009, 03:43:14 am
Hello,

I have a question.
I'm about to install civicrm for a school alumni foundation.
They allready have an Joomla instance running and want to install civicrm on an other domain or subdomain during the developement phase.
What would be the best installation strategie. Is civi crm easy to "move" to an other domain/server?

Is it a wise desiscion to make a different database/instance, or does it require to install in the same instance with a different prefix.

Edwin.

Edwin,

There is documentation on moving CiviCRM in between servers, it applies to moving between instances/domains as well:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Moving+an+Existing+Installation+to+a+New+Server+or+Location

Doing development on separate instance sounds like a good strategy.

Thx,
m

Civi can be moved, but there are a number of steps you need to take (as the document referenced indicates).

However, as long as you're making regular backups, you're probably safe developing on the main Joomla install. You won't be exposing any Civi pages to the front of the site until you're ready, and Civi is stable enough, you don't really need to worry about it messing up the rest of your J! install. There's a measure of risk, but in my experience, it's low and manageable.

Thanks for you answer(s).

I'm still not sure how to set up Joomla. I want the members to be able to change their profile, but to do so, they need to be logged-in.
How to deal with this situation?
