Event Listing Map
August 14, 2009, 08:25:00 am
Hi. On installing 3.0a2 in Joomla 1.5.14, an existing CiviEvent page which included a link to a map of the location via usual functionality has changed so that:

1. The map is shown in situ (with a larger map button option), rather than opening when a link is clicked on: this messes up the formatting as the map falls off the edge of the page: it would be OK if it was below the event location address but seems to be placed to the right of it.
2. The "register" link appears to go to the "already clicked" colour, and is therefore even less visible than normal. The "home" link on the menu also appears to be affected.

Difficult to know without enabling a mapping provider, but I'm not sure its wise to put my Google Mapping key into a public sandbox. I've created an event but of course it doesn't show a map.

There is a known issue for links in 3.0. For your reference: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-4884

Showing a small map "inline" was a change initiated by the team. The thought was that this would be an improvement (avoiding an extra click to see the map). However, given Ed's example (and the fact that other folks probably have implemented specific designs/layouts for event info pages that might be messed up by the inline map) - I'm thinking we should revert this and go back to just showing a link for the map when available.

Other thoughts on this?

I do think the inline map is a good feature for the users. We might want to tweak the layout a bit to make it flow better. Users that dont like it can customize the template and remove the inline mapping code (templates/CRM/Event/Page/EventInfo.tpl, line 43..)

I agree with the idea of going back to the link vs. map display, or providing me with some way to change map dimensions. The current setup does not work well with my existing template in my Drupal installation, and changing the template isn't an option (client requirement)

Thanks
Chris
