All,

I'm currently (like, right *now*!) upgrading from 1.7 to 1.8. The upgrade directions indicate that MySQL 4.0 is no longer supported and recommends that you "upgrade to the current generally available release of MySQL", but does not make it clear what versions *are* supported. May I assume that MySQL 4.1 *is* still supported?

Yes. we support mysql 4.1.x, thought we tend to install and test with only the latest versions.

If you are upgrading your mysql version, you might want to consider upgrading to mysql 5.x rather than 4.1.x. CiviCRM v2.0 (the next release) will only support 5.0.x and later versions

Well, I'm running on a hosted account, but I can be moved to another server. Would you anticipate any problems having them move my account to a box running PHP5 and MySQL5? (I'm currently running Drupal and CiviCRM on PHP4 and MySQL4.1.)

PHP5 and MySQL 5 are what CiviCRM is currently developed on - so that platform should work well for you. HOWEVER, you will need to use the PHP5 version of CiviCRM 1.8 when you upgrade.

Would that be a simple "delete PHP4 1.8 module files, install php5 1.8 module files" installation?

yes. You might also want to ensure that you have truncated your session tables in drupal and deleted the templates_c directory from the php4 version of civicrm

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Upgrading+Drupal+Sites+from+v1.7+to+v1.8#UpgradingDrupalSitesfromv1.7tov1.8-7.DeleteallrecordsfromDrupal%27ssessiontable%28drupal.sessions%29

Specifically steps 7, 8 and 9
