Stuck trying to upgrade v1.9 to 2.2 on Drupal 6.13

My Drupal site has been upgraded already to 6.13 and now I can't upgrade CiviCRM from v1.9 to the latest 2.2.  I'm working through the instructions, but the upgrade to 2.0 (which I'm told is required to be run before the upgrade to 2.1 before the upgrade to 2.2) will not run on Drupal 6.13.

Do I have to use the graphical upgrade script?  Can't I just run some database scripts in sequence to get the database to the correct version and apply the new version of the software?

Yes.

No.

I would -
1. install another drupal 5.x version
2. connect civicrm db to this drupal
3. upgrade civicrm to 2.0
4. replace civicrm db for you drupal 6.13 with upgraded db (from step 3)
5. upgrade to 2.1 and then 2.2
Note: Never forget to take backups.
