What is the outgoing email address if using a CiviSMTP account?
August 20, 2009, 01:40:01 am
We've been trying to set up a return channel in CiviCRM and unfortunately none of the suggested solutions works for our organization. We would therefore like to set up the paid solution and setup a CiviSMTP account.

The only thing we're worrying about is if after setting up CiviSMTP account, will we still be able to use our existing e-mail address (@organization.org) in CiviMail as the originating e-mail address? That is what will the subscribers see in the "from" field of their emails?

Thanks!

yes, you can still use your existing @organization.org email address as the originating e-mail address. CiviSMTP does not modify the from or reply-to. in the From field your subscribers will see the address that you specified when creating the mailing in the CiviMail.

Thanks. Okay, so I'm not really sure how this works then. If the from field will stay as it is (our original address), then how will we be tracking the bounces, replies and statistics on those two?  Won't the replies be going to our server which isn't set up to handle the return channel? :P

in short, here's how it works with CiviSMTP :

Email Domain - you choose a domain that you will use for your newsletters for example <newsletter.yourorganization.org>. You will configure your CiviCRM with this domain so that all reply-to, subscribe, unsubscribe, bounce and etc addresses are generated with this domain.

Note that this doesn't affect your "From" address, you can still specify whatever From address you want for a mailing regardless of what you chose for the email domain. When people reply the "Reply-To" address is used for the recipient, not the "From" address and in this case the reply-to will be a generated address @newsletter.yourorganization.org, for example:

r.13.24.a56c8f9fa1ff1b6b@newsletter.yourorganization.org

MX records - you will configure your MX records to point your email domain <newsletter.yourorganization.org> to our email servers. From this point any email that is addressed to some address @newsletter.yourorganization.org will go to our servers. this means all subscribes, unsubscribes, replies, bounces and etc. will go to our servers first.

our servers then process these responses and form an appropriate SOAP request and send it to your CiviCRM SOAP Proxy URL that you specify for your CiviSMTP Account.

The CiviCRM Soap Server is simply a script that comes with CiviCRM and can be accessed via the web after you have successfully installed and activated CiviCRM and CiviMail. This is the return channel part of your CiviMail for processing subscribes, unsubscribes and etc. Therefore a working SOAP Proxy is a requirement for using CiviSMTP.

you can read here in more detail on what steps will be necessary to make your CiviMail work with CiviSMTP:

hope this helps,

Ah, I understand now. Thanks for clarifying!  :) We'll probably sign up a day or two.
