When you add a new relationship for a contact, the list of relationship type options sometimes shows duplicates. Looking into it, it is when the relationship type's entities are the same in both directions. For example, "spouse of" shows twice since the relationship is between two individuals. It seems like if the contact can be on either side of the relationship, the list shows what appears to be duplicates.

Is this a bug? Looking at 2.2.7 install, it did this back then too.
