Upgrading CiviCRM to 2.2 - How to set up a test site?
August 23, 2009, 02:29:13 am
Hi-

I am having trouble understanding this instruction for upgrading to 2.2:

Upgrade a Copy of Your Site First and Make a Complete Backup
We strongly recommend that you create a copy of your existing site (directories and database) - and upgrade that copy first in order to make sure you can complete the upgrade successfully. In any case, you should create a full backup of the installed civicrm directory tree and civicrm database before beginning the upgrade process.
If you are upgrading a COPY of your production 2.1 site - make sure the site you are about to upgrade is a fully functioning 2.1 installation before you begin the upgrade process. (more info...)

How exactly do i copy the directories and database?  i have downloaded a backup of my database and I have a copy of my directories, but now what steps do i go through to make sure that this test installation isn't referring to my original database?  I am afriad to go to this test directory for fear of screwing up my original install.

Thanks for obliging this newbie question!

-P

Try this

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMUPCOMING/Moving+an+Existing+Installation+to+a+New+Server+or+Location

(if you have trouble then post back here but please think about updating this page if it is not clear enough)

hi-

Thanks for the helpful link-  the process seems a lot clearer, and I think it should be added to the documentation at http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Upgrade+Drupal+Sites+to+2.2#UpgradeDrupalSitesto2.2-verifysettings

Just one thing I would like to confirm-

First steps:
1. Copy entire drupal directory to local and then upload back to remote at something like /tmp/drupal/
2. Use phpMyAdmin to upload a copy of the drupal and civicrm database and call it something like tmp_db (so that old and new installs of drupal and civicrm are seperated out)

am i getting this correct?  Also one more question-  what do i do with my CiviCRM_custom folder in my root directory?  These are certain pages which were customized for our purposes.  thanks for your help

you will also need to move the CiviCRM_Custom directory to the new server/location and set the appropriate path in the admimister CiviCRM settings

Thanks to all for responding.  When I am trying to download the drupal folder or duplicate it on the server, a php script from CiviCRM is causing trouble.

This is the message i'm getting:

Server said:
Can't open Label.php: Permission denied

Error -160: could not start data transfer

If you can tell me how this can be resolved, I would appreciate it.

I'm not actually sure I know what you mean by:

could have been clearer-

I am trying to clone the installation into a different location on the same remote host so i can test the upgrade.  So to do this I have downloaded a backup of the database, and i am trying to:

a. copy the entire drupal core directory onto local machine, then upload it to a temporary "test" folder
or b.  duplicate the core directory on the remote server and rename new directory

both of these are causing the error related to CiviCRM script label.php

This most probably means that the user you’re logging in as into the server does not have read access to that file (while your webserver’s user might). If you don’t have admin rights on the server, you might need to contact the hosting administrator/provider.
If you found the above helpful, please consider helping us in return – you can even steer CiviCRM’s future and help us extend CiviCRM in ways useful to you.
