Blank page after successful install
August 21, 2007, 11:56:19 am
I have done a clean install of Civicrm 1.8.10954 for Joomla and the install went fine.  However, when I click on any of the menu options under CIVICRM under the components menu, I only get a blank page.

The site is hosted on a server using PHP 5.2.1 and MySQL 4.0.27.

I am using Joomla 1.0.12

Memory is set at 32M.

I have been wrestling with this for a couple of weeks and any ideas are appreciated.

ADDITIONAL NOTE:

I subsequently noticed that the file civicrm.settings.php does not exist in either the admin civicrm directory or the main components directory, yet the message was that the install was successful.

I then uploaded the civicrm.settings.php file to both civicrm directories (with the appropriate edits of civicrm.settings.php), with no success.

Another addition:

I checked with my server, and here's what they said:

Quote
We tried installing the component com_civicrm and it is also not working. We have cross checked all the requirements for installing this software and the server is satisfying all those requirements. It seems the issue is with the com_civicrm component itself. We are afraid to say that there is nothing much we can do in such a case.

Does civiCRM work on Joomla 1.0.12 with php5 and Mysql 4.0.27?

Can u check your error logs to see what error is being reported

also note that the civicrm.settings.php file is above the civicrm directory in joomla, i.e. at

administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php
components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php

I've sent an email to my webhost support asking about any error messages, and they confirmed that the log did not show any errors.

I double-checked, and the civicrm.settings.php file is in both:

administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php
and
components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php

a few things:

1. we do not support mysql 4.0.x. However i dont think that is the error

2. A blank page in PHP typically means an error somewhere in the script which is captured in an error log. Trying to debug without the error message is incredibly hard.

Hi,

I've been playing around with Joomla 1.0.13 and Civicrm-1.8.11248 for PHP5 and Joomla.

I have two servers I'am playing with :

  1. A windows XP with Xampp 1.6.3a
  2. A unix server at my hosting provider 'yourwww' : PHP5 , Mysql 4

The installation on the Win XP went OK but when I tried to start CiviCRM from the menu it gave me an 'open stream failed' error on a 'smarty' file.  I checked the content on the directory under "\xampp\htdocs\Joomla\administrator\components\com_civicrm\civicrm\packages\Smarty" and noticed that the file joomla was trying to open didn't exist.  I copied the content of the original directory to this location and CiviCRM started working.

The installation on my hosted server also reported success.  The I also tried to start CiviCRM from the menu and it gave me a blank page, in fact all CiviCRM submenu's also give a blank page.  I checked the directory under "/var/www/html/joomla/components/com_civicrm" and this one only contains two files "civicrm.html.php" and "civicrm.php".  All the files visible on the Windows XP machine are not present here ... could this be the error ?

Regards,
Frank

Hi,

I've just checked the errorlog of my hosted server.  Maybe some interesting lines to check :

Not enough memory allocated in php.ini ?  This moment it has 32M has limit.

From the error log looks like you have allocated only 8M of memory (Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted)

also com_civicrm should have 3 files, here is a directory listing from my local joomla install:

Code: [Select]
tasmania:~/svn/crm_v1.8 lobo$ ls -ltr ~/public_html/joomla/components/com_civicrm/
total 40
-rw-r--r--   1 www  lobo  3234 Jul 31 13:10 civicrm.php
-rw-r--r--   1 www  lobo   354 Jul 31 13:10 civicrm.html.php
-rw-r--r--   1 www  lobo  9063 Jul 31 13:23 civicrm.settings.php

Hi Lobo,

You're right.  I've doublechecked the logs and contacted my hosting provider.  The php.ini I'd changed for having 600s script timeout and 32MB script memory was not functioning.  They don't allow changes in that ini file.  My hosting provider only wants to set the default memory value to 16MB not higher.  Can I alter some things in the installation procedure that would allow me to install CiviCRM without needing 32MB ?
I'm planning to start with the Civimail and CiviMember parts.

Regards,
Frank

Frank:

Unfortunately not. CiviCRM is a bit "heavy" in terms of code and memory usage. We hope to slim it down in future releases

Hi Lobo,

That's a pity. Just one more try ... what if I would take the running installation of Joomla and CiviCRM on my Windows XP, back it up via a Joomla backup component and restore it in my hosted environment ?  I guess this would work .. but one of the questions that remain is : Once installed correctly, can CiviCRM run with 16MB if the database is not too packed ?

Frank

frank:

not sure of civicrm's memory profile on a per page basis and db size basis. You might want to give it a shot and see if it works for you. please report back your findings
