RESOLVED: styling custom data in profiles

Can anyone give advice on how to style fields in a Drupal user register/edit profile? I'm using Drupal's default Garland theme for now, and custom data checkboxes appear bunched together, side-by-side. I'd like to put line breaks between the options but don't see a straightforward way to do so, short of learning how to build custom profiles. Am I missing something basic? If I do need to create a custom profile, are there any beginner examples to get started? The manual doesn't have any examples, and Confluence page on customizing profiles seems to assume that the reader is already a CiviCRM developer.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

In the custom field settings, there is an option for how many checkboxes you want per line. You can use that option to get a better display of custom checkboxes
