Log file CiviCRM.log is not writable.

I am  upgrading CRM in Joomla to 2.2.8 from 2.1.7.  When I go to upgrade the database, I get this error.  Where do I find this file and/or directory?  I have searched all over this forum and Google.

1. can u cut-n-paste the exact error

2. typically this file is written in the media directory of your joomla install: media/civicrm/upload/CiviCRM.log.*

I found the directory changed the persmissions and ran the upgrade. Now I am getting this.
Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred.

Your database is marked with an unexpected version number: 2.11. The automated upgrade to version 2.2.8 can not be run - and the 2.2.8 codebase may not be compatible with your database state. You will need to determine the correct version corresponding to your current database state. The database tools utility at http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Database+Troubleshooting+Tools may be helpful. You may want to revert to the codebase you were using prior to beginning this upgrade until you resolve this problem.

Error indicates that something went wrong towards 2.2.x upgrade. The db could be missing some required tables/fields or any other.
Can you check civicrm log and see if there is any specific error ?
