Tips for CiviMail with Plesk on Linux
August 30, 2009, 02:08:38 pm
I just struggled with CiviMail with Plesk for the past 3 days.  I'm feeling much better now, and they say I'll be released from the padded cell soon.   ;D

I learned a lot and thought I'd post a few tips here...

  • Specify SMTP sending in "Administer CiviCRM -> Global Settings -> Settings - Outbound Mail" rather than sendmail if you want VERP bounce handling using CiviMailProcessor.
  • Enable SMTP authentication and specify the full email address as the username.
  • Check your mail server settings in the plesk CP.  You'll probably need to check "Enable message submission" to get around TLS auth, which doesn't appear to be supported by the SMTP library.  Then change your SMTP sending port to 587.  This enables local users to send using SMTP without relaying restrictions.
  • Look at the logs (thanks Lobo).  On Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, I found good info in /var/log/mail.info and /var/logmail.error
  • Remember that Plesk on Linux uses Qmail.  Many of the troubleshooting posts I found deal with Postfix.  Locations of logs are a little different than many posts suggest.
  • Use CiviMailProcessor rather than amavis, imap2soap, etc.  It seems to be the easiest to set up with Plesk (I tried all 3).
  • Upgrade your Plesk control panel.  There were some permission issues on maildirs and logs with 8.6.  I upgraded to 9.2.2 and things started working a little better (not working yet - just working better)
  • Don't let clients mess with things once you have them working.
