Event site look and feel

I'm new to CiviCRM and am using it to collect registrations for an event. I've figured out how to create the form, but I want to customize the look of the site to mirror the website pages I've created. I've reviewed the wiki pages about customizing the templates, but am lost. What exactly should be in the .tpl file? Is there an example?
