Some API functions return html snippets (eg civicrm_uf_profile_html_get), and some hooks require URL parameters that provide html snippets (eg http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMUPCOMING/CiviCRM+hook+specification#CiviCRMhookspecification-hookcivicrmtabs).

Currently, the output of an AJAX or rest call is rendered in xml by default and as JSON when the key-value pair of json=1 is added to the url request submitted. Neither allow the html returned to be consumed directly.

The attached patch to civicrm/Core/Utils/REST.php  provides the option of requesting the output of a rest call in html.by adding html=1 to the url request.

Is this something that I could/should be putting into a Jira Issue for 3.1?
