Custom fields on relationships - improved flexibility

As part of our pre-implementation planning we have decided that we are going to make quite extensive use of custom fields on relationships to give further detail on the area of focus of the relationship, the scope of the role, the current status of the role, and similar things
For example, rather than having a 'Potential National Alpha Adviser' role and a 'Retired Local Marriage Adviser' role, we will have one 'Advisor' relationship and then custom fields to select National/Local, Alpha/Marriage, Potential/Retired.
This functionality that already exists in Civi is great for this and much simplifies things.
But...
As things stand, a custom field can only apply to either ALL relationships, or to a single relationship.
Thus, where we have a number of relationships (but not all) where we would like to mandate the selection of a field such as 'National/Local', we would need to create that custom field several times for each relevant relationship (if we have understood the workings of Civi correctly - we realise we can recycle the option choices, but the field needs setting up for each relationship)
We would be happy to sponsor a development that allowed the administrator to 'multi-select' from the complete list of relationships which relationships they want the field to apply to, assuming it is not too major a development.
Anyone else feel this would be of value, or got any comments on the suggestion?

I think that would be a very valuable contribution. I've run into the same situation with custom fields for events and memberships, where I'd like to assign them to several in a list -- not just one or all. So I'd love to see any such implementation be extended to those other areas as well.
