high # of bounces?
September 03, 2009, 03:55:02 am
I've got three clients all happily using UAS, but one of them [fairvote.ca] is reporting that twice in the past week, his mailouts have had approx. 50% bounce rates. In both cases, he resent them [identically], and they went out with a normal 1-2% bounce rate. When I looked in the civimail report, almost all the bad bounces were of type 'unknown', so that wasn't very helpful.

Has anyone else had a similar experience recently? The only change at this end was a recent upgrade from Drupal 5/CiviCRM 1.9 to Drupal 6/CiviCRM 2.2, which in other respects has worked well.

Hi Allan,

could you please tell us specific dates/times for the mailings that failed and for the ones that were a repeat that had normal bounce rate.
and also please tell us how many bounces for each mailing there were.

we'll check our logs and see if we can help figure this out.

thank you,

Leyla

Re: high # of bounces?

sorry for a delayed response.

we checked our logs for the above dates and here's what we have for those mailings:

Aug 24-25th failed mailing, id 782:

we had 446 bounces in our logs. in your civimail report for your mailing you had 1445

Aug 25th successful mailing, id 783:

we had 450 bounces in our logs. civimail report - 452

mailing id 789, September 2nd failed mailing:

  20 bounces.  civimail report - 658 bounces.

Sept 2nd successful mailing, id 790:

48 bounces in our logs. civimail report - 48 bounces.

As you can see for failed mailings the number of bounces that went through our system is much lower than what you see in the civimail report.

This is likely because the excess bounces were generated by civimail due to some error during mailing and is probably why they are all of type 'unknown'

It could be that the connection to the smtp server was dropped during the mailing.

If this becomes a consistent problem for you and your client we'll have to look into providing some batching mechanism for your civimail.

I just ran the first mailing for a client and the bounce rate was 33%.  All were Invalid with reason Unknown.  It seems very high but I am not sure if they are old emails or what.  I just wonder because of the 'Unknown' factor - there should be a reason for a bounce, no?  Thank you.

This was fun to find out - all but one of the emails sent to the clients own domain were failures.

i'll hazard a guess that your DNS MX record isn't setup properly.
