I had a mass email recently sent out that yielded a higher than normal amount of bounces. The bounce messages revealed that many of the email addresses had ".org" appended to them. So there are a number of emails with: user@domain.com.org

I'm at a loss as to how to troubleshoot this. I know that it only affected some of the emails -- many went through without a problem, confirmed by the receipt of tracking url records. There's nothing unique about the records/emails that bounced that would seem to distinguish them from the others. And the bounce message isn't helpful -- just indicates the address had permanent errors, which is reflective of the broken domains.

Ideas?

1. can u check if their civicrm emails are changed to user@domain.com.org? if so, u might want to try to pin down when that change happened and how?

you mean in the record itself?
no. the record didn't change. when I saw a few of the error msgs, I assumed it was just a data problem. but the email in the record is correct -- before and after the email is sent. somehow the .org is being appended just at the point of delivery.

If i had to guess, i suspect your mailer is "re-writing" some email addresses. Do u have a mail log that u can check and see what civicrm hands it etc

another option would be to do a short test run with known addresses that were changed. Add this line to your civicrm.settings.php file

define( 'CIVICRM_MAIL_LOG' , 1 );

that will log all emails instead of sending them out. You can see the exact email civicrm is handing off to the SMTP server

I'm using sendmail as the outbound mail option. And though I have access to mail logs, it doesn't have anything re: these mailings, as it's not going through the server's smtp.

I've added that value to settings. Where is that log saved?

the filenames are an md5 hash, so kinda wierd cryptic names

Well, turns out I was looking at the wrong log files earlier. $:-\$

And the log files do contain records of the problem files. Here's a sample:

Doesn't seem to tell me much. But it does confirm that the .org is appended before being sent to sendmail.

One more thing --
I sent another test email to a record that previously was rewritten, and two other emails. The one previously affected was again rewritten - the other two where not.

can u log all the emails and see if any are rewritten. that way we'll figure out if civicrm is the culprit or not.

however my gut feel is that its in your mailer

I added the mailing log switch to both my settings files, but it's still sending them out instead of logging them. Do I need to have debugging turned on for that to trigger?

I use the setting all the time since i dont want email going out

definitely not working. i'm still getting the emails, and have confirmed the log trigger is definitely in the settings file. i just added to the end, underneath the pass key config line. the mail subfolder in uploads had not even been created.
