Installing on Windows with XAMP
September 08, 2009, 06:27:43 am
I work for a small non-profit and we are (unfortunately) a Windows shop. Our IT department does not want to support two platforms (Windows and Linux) and we are therefore in the process of migrating everything over to Windows. Can CiviCRM be reliably run on XAMPP under Windows?

We are testing out a Drupal installation on XAMPP under windows and so far that seems to be fine. I am interested in testing out the standalone version of CiviCRM as we are probably not going to have our Drupal migration competed for another six months to a year and we would really like to get going with CiviCRM before that. We will eventually integrate the two but for now I would at least like to look at the standalone.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

CiviCRM should work on windows. However note that ALL the core developers and a large part of the user base use/run it on *nix systems. our ability to support CiviCRM on windows is limited

Standalone require OpenID for login. if you are fine and comfortable with that, standalone is a great choice. Else you can start by using drupal as a simple auth/login/permission program for civicrm and later on use more features

So I really do not need to use Drupal for the website at this point? I can actually use it only for the login for CiviCRM and drop the website (OK, maybe not simply 'drop') into Drupal at a later point? All the while our website stays where it is till we are ready to move it over?

I am still working on getting out IT department to OK using Linux at least for the Drupal/phpBB/CiviCRM installations, we'll see how that goes. The way that I see it, with the money that we save using open source CRM and CMS we could get an outside company to provide Linux support if need be.

I think that CiviCRM doesn't work latest XAMPP because it use latest PHP version (5.3.0).
