Cannot figure out how to match participant with contact when importing
September 09, 2009, 12:13:28 pm
I've search everywhere and am missing some assumed information.

I imported contacts and assigned an External ID to the contact. But when I import participants, there is no CiviCRM field to match the External ID to.

Can anyone fill in the blanks for me.

<sigh>
I feel so dumb some days.

P.S. Version information in profile is correct.

I am not sure why you are not getting "External Identifier (match to contact)" field on participant import to match record w/ contact external identifier.
you might want to check on our public demo : http://joomla.demo.civicrm.org/administrator/index2.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/event/import&reset=1

Thanks, I should have thought of checking the demo site.

I see there the "match to contact" fields. I checked another CiviCRM install on another web site I have and the fields do show on that site also. However, the web site where I need it is not showing any of the "matching" fields.

I must be missing a file or have some database corruption. I have no other symptoms to indicate a problem.

Do you know what source file those fields should be displaying from? I may have to backup my civi_ tables and try a fresh install.

I clicked through all the global settings to make sure everything was OK. I did not change anything, but the activity must have refreshed configuration files. I now see the additional "matching" fields and successfully uploaded participants and matched to an External ID.

Lesson learned: Check the demo site to see how something *should* work.

fwiw (and as note to self!) - just a note that if you click on 'update' in screen 1 - then this means you are 'updating the participant record', not the contact. And therefore if you click on Update you won't find the options to 'match to contact' via email, external id etc, as the match would have to be done on the Participant ID.

So, if you are missing the 'match to contact' options in screen 2 - maybe worth going back to Step 1 and checking that you have 'skip' checked, not 'update' ;-)
