Replace "State", "Country" auto-complete fields with drop-down lists?

Can anyone suggest a method to replace the "State" and "Country" auto-complete lists in the address entry area of CiviCRM with a standard drop-down box? (Using v1.8 until I have a chance to upgrade.)
