Apache maxing out memory on relationship lookup
September 16, 2009, 12:06:30 pm
I was wondering if anyone is having similar issues or knows a workaround?

Whenever we try to create a new relationship between contacts (I've tested this in multiple scenarios, contact to org, org to contact, etc.), apache starts chewing up a ton of memory. This did cause our server to crash a few times. After tweaking apache, it will kill the process when it starts to hang, but the result to the user is a "too many records to display" error.

Thoughts?

Thanks all!!

1. can you upgrade to 2.2.9

we'd definitely want to investigate and fix this if it happening in the latest 2.2.x / 3.0.x series

Okay we upgraded to 3.0 and had the same issues. Still maxing out occasionally and EVERYTHING was running slow.

Looking at the server, there were 4 instances of apache running constantly eating up 20%+ each.

We're using Slicehost and had a 256 memory slice. So we upgraded to 512 and now everything is fine! Really strange, can't make heads or tails of why that seemed to fix it, other than maybe CiviCRM just needs at least 512 memory?

Thanks again.

is apache still eating 20% cpu/memory?

is your civicrm install in constant use? you might want to check the queries being executed against mysql and see what process is consuming so much time/resources

It is not, currently. We're watching it closer now... not sure why it was doing that before. Will keep you posted here.
