There was some discussion months ago about finding tools to automatically populate the "County" field (and, by extension, possibly other geographical custom fields) with the longitude/latitude data: http://www.nabble.com/Loading-and-assigning-County-data-tf3303315s15986.html#a9188567

Has anyone made any progress on this? We want to use it for smart group organizing. I assume it would be key for many other organizations as well.

No. While folks are interested in it, no one has stepped up to actually implement it and get it working.

Would be great for you/your org to take the lead on this, since it seems key to what you are doing

What would you estimate the cost for someone like your group or CivicSpaceLabs to complete this?

hard to give an estimate without knowing what exactly needs to be done, but here are some components from the mailing list:

1. Creating a US  state -> county table. This seems like someone has already done this

2. Extending the edit contact form to include an ajaxified county table (similar to how state is based on country). 30-50 hours, since we are just getting familiar with our ajax library (dojo)

3. Automatically determining the county based on a user's address and computed lat/long. Not sure if we have lat/long boundary data for counties available easily, but doing that research and getting upto speed on the necessary equations etc with regard to lat/long will consume most of the time (IMO). So i would probably put this as another 30-50 hour project
