Paypal Not Auto Returning
September 21, 2009, 04:07:51 pm
I have Auto Return set to On in PayPal, with a proper return url to my live Joomla site, but it is not returning.

I don't mind the extra page that is displayed to users so much, but when they manually click the button to go back to the site (if they click it), a warning comes up because it's going back to a non-secure site, and that scares many away.

Are there any common reasons for this Auto Return not working?

Thanks,
Phil

I think I've figured out that PayPal will not auto return to an http:// page. You need to have an https:// page on your site for auto return to work. Sorry for late posting this but I thought it might help someone.

Good to know. If you're pretty sure about this would be great if you could update the PayPal configuration doc on the wiki.

My bad. I was confusing myself as I was having 2 issues with PayPal.

The main issue is that if your site is not secure (https), PayPal pops up a warning when users click to go back to your site after payment.

Part 2 is I figured I could bypass this using Auto Return, but that only works if users pay with PayPal. If you allow users to pay without creating a PayPal account, which is essential for most users, Auto Return won't work.

From the developer website: http://developer.paypal-portal.com/pdn/board/message?board.id=ppcart&message.id=10191
Note: If you have turned on Auto Return and have chosen to turn on PayPal Account Optional for new users, a new user will not be automatically directed back to your website, but will be given the option to return.

I will update the Wiki.
