Getting count of participant for events showing in Views

Couldn't find a related thread so maybe nobody has been here before. Have a View (type CiviEvent) showing a list of events with links to participants for each event - keen to add a column that would show count of Registered and Pending attendees.

Not spotting this option. Had a check for relevant 'relationships' as in 'find contacts who are participants of the event' but no joy.

Is this another case of 'if you want it, build it' - or am I missing something obvious.  (NB 2.2.8)

http://drupal.org/project/views_customfield + a little bit of CiviCRM API calls could help. That would be a fast solution, for a proper solution a change in integration code would be needed...
