3.1.6 => 3.2.3 upgrade fails with Smarty cache errors

I got all the way to step 8 of the upgrade instructions (running the upgrade script), and when I did it produced a whole series of warnings, and the upgrade script failed. I reinstalled the previous version and rolled back the database, but I can't seem to lose these warning messages - now I can't run CiviCRM at all (after the warnings, no CiviCRM interface is displayed - Drupal admin menus still display, but not CiviCRM). I've emptied the templates_c directory, but I still get these warning Is there any way to reset Smarty so it will rebuild the cache? Through the filesystem? Through the database?

Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

Well, it looks like it might have been some kind of permissions problem (though without any error reporting, it's hard to know for sure - I noticed in the Smarty code there are quite a few places where errors could occur where the return values of a call are ignored). I ended up:

(a) going through the list of missing cached template files and creating zero-length versions of the files (using the 'touch' command from the shell),

(b) writing a little script to recreate all the template caching subdirectories (%%00/000 through %%FF/FFF), and

(c) temporarily modifying Smarty.class.php to force it to compile templates whether it thought it needed to or not

One or all of those made the errors go away enough so I could complete the upgrade. The only lingering problem was in the Activities dashlet on the dashboard - more template errors there. But that went away with a simple click on 'Refresh Dashboard Data'. Whew.

I hope this helps someone else... and maybe we could get some more error reporting and/or logging in the Smarty code.
