memory exhausted running membership detail report to pdf

Hi,
  When trying to output membership detail report to pdf I hit a memory error:
Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 82 bytes)
My php memory_limit = 128M (max allowed by shared hosting environment)
All works ok with 60-70 contacts but anything over that blows memory.
This is joomla 1.7.3 civicrm 4.0.8 php 5.3.9
Any advise much appreciated.

yes the pdf library has some fairly significant memory limitations

u'll need to do the below manually in chunks of 50 members.

This has been coming up quite often and would be good if we can figure out a solution
