Household suggestion
August 30, 2013, 05:07:56 pm
I've read the various threads about the pros and cons of whether to use households or not. I think I actually prefer to use households.

I have one suggestion that I think would make the use of households much better. Have the household to aggregate the members donations of that household when running a report on that household.

For instance, Jane and John Doe are individuals and are included in the Doe Household. Jane gives $50 and John gives $50. If I view the Doe Household nothing shows under Contributions so it appears that household has given nothing when in reality the household has contributed $100. I haven't fully thought out the implications but initially I'm thinking it would be good to remove the ability of a household by itself to make a donation and only have the household be a container for the household members that would aggregate the contributions of those members within that household. So that all contributions would be assigned to either an org or an individual. For NGO's that use the household option they could obtain the total contribution amount for that household.

Just a thought.

I just was thinking about this again and realized that I could use the soft credit feature to soft credit the household based on the giving of the individual.

I'm not sure that's going to work.

I'm not able to do a search for Contributions for a household that are soft credited. My intent was to soft credit from the individual to the household and then use the household to do the Print or email the receipt.

Hmm will have to rethink this.
